We’re not only still recycling, but it’s easier?!
You may recall the theme from our last article, namely how most curbside collection of residential recyclables by haulers in Oneida County now consists of a 2-stream system. And that these two streams consist of: MIXED CONTAINERS (glass bottles/jars, tin and aluminum cans and plastic milk jugs, pop bottles and soap bottles) and MIXED PAPER (catalogues, magazines, newspaper, cardboard, office paper and paper junk mail).

While some people may still be getting use to this work and space saving bonanza, and the County Health Department has strongly advised me to “Go slow to allow people to adjust to all this good news”, and since discretion is the better part of valor…. But, of course those of you who know me, know that I am not very discrete…

Anyways, check your pace maker, pop a nitro or whatever other legally prescribed medication your medical practioner has recommended for handling stress, because I have more good news! Recycling has gotten even easier!

For example, the need to pull glossy inserts out of newspapers before recycling them. NO LONGER NECESSARY! If it is paper and comes in a newspaper, it can be recycled with the newspaper.

Cardboard… tag board, cereal boxes and even wet strength cardboard such as pop and beer boxes can now be recycled with your “regular” corrugated cardboard. ALSO any paper grocery bags can be recycled with your cardboard.

Plastics, the use of resins 3-7 has slowly, but surely been decreasing. This means that a greater percentage of plastic containers are now actually being recycled. I still tend to shy away from discussing resin numbers, because they tend to only confuse people. It is easier to remember to recycle milk jugs, pop bottles and soap bottles. These three types of plastic containers represent over 90% of the recyclable plastics.

Now the bad news… of course there has to be some bad news… for those folks who bring their recycling directly to the Solid Waste Site you will still have to separate your papers and containers. While this is still provided for free, we are unable to accommodate mixing recyclables in our public drop-off. And besides, we didn’t want folks to get too excited!
