How’d you like your asbestos?
Every so often I receive one of those mysterious calls… “Ah, Mr. Sexton” (that’s enough to make me suspicious right off the bat!), “ I have this friend and I, I mean he, thinks that he has some, uh, well, asbestos.… My friend wants to do the right thing, but… I,… I mean he, doesn’t want to spend $ 10,000 getting it cleaned up and properly disposed of”.

Asbestos typically comes in two forms, friable and non-friable. The friable form is the one of most concern and is usually found as old pipe insulation. The concern with friable asbestos is that when handling this crumbly material, the asbestos fibers become airborne and have the greatest potential to be inhaled by somebody. Asbestos inhalation has been linked to lung cancer and other pulmonary disorders.

Just because you have friable asbestos doesn’t mean that you have to remove it. If the outer wrapping of the insulation is in good shape, and/or the piping is located in an out of the way place, such as a crawl space, there is no real need or requirement to remove the material. The old adage let a sleeping dog lie applies here. Removal and disposal of friable asbestos is best done by a professional, since certain safety precautions need to be taken during removal and the material needs to be manifested and properly disposed of.

Another form of asbestos is non-friable asbestos. The most common forms of non-friable asbestos articles include some older shingles and “slate” siding. As long as non-friable asbestos materials are “not beaten to a powder” they are relatively safe to handle. Simply precautions to take when removing these materials include: 1) using a good quality dust mask, and 2) not having teenagers remove the materials with a sledge hammer while listening to heavy metal music.

Non-friable asbestos materials must be placed in the sanitary landfill at the regular $ 45/ton fee, compared to the $140/ton charge for friable asbestos. Customers bringing non-friable asbestos to the landfill should call in advance. This allows us to dig a hole and bury the material, which prevents the asbestos fibers from becoming airborne.

So most asbestos disposal is not that big a deal! If you, or a friend, have questions about asbestos disposal, please call Bart at 282-4944.
