Demolition Man, demolished
My last article regarding demolition of old structures has brought some deserved reprimands. “So Bart, what ever happened to reduce, REUSE & recycle?.” “ Just throw all that stuff away, huh?!” Well, touché …
You don’t have to throw it all away. Quite often we can save some items of value when demolishing a structure. Wood prices being what they are, a few 2x4s, 2x10s and/or tongue and groove salvaged can save some real money. Old barn boards are another example of building material salvage and that craze continues because there are fewer and fewer barns each year.
Now I live in Harry Lassig’s homestead which started life as a log cabin some few decades ago. And by gosh, Harry and his brother Herman, being masons, had an assortment of block and brick like there was no tomorrow. Including as Marty Berger describes them… “those 100 lb, 2 man, German concrete block”. I’ve run across several dozen of these and they’ve come in handy for everything from propping up a boat, to forming the foundation for a garden shed to forming the end of my raised beds in the garden. Not to mention the healthful exercise I’ve received by moving the buggers 2 or 3 times!
But the point is (yes there is actually a point in all this eclectic rambling), while there is always a fair amount of demolition going on around these parts, there is not much deconstructing/salvaging. So let’s give it a try. If you’re a contractor or somebody who would be interested in doing salvage/deconstruction, give me a call and I’ll start up a list. Likewise if you have a structure to come down and think you might have some stuff worth salvaging, give me a call and I’ll give you “the list”. Then “yous guys” can figure out the details… My phone number is 282-4945.
You might save some disposal money, they might get some valuable materials and be able to REUSE them, all wars end, global warming reverses slightly and stabilizes, droughts and famines cease and all is well with the world… or at least there would be less stuff going in landfills.
