Tis’ a sad, sad day…..Bob was right?!!!
In every public servant’s career there comes a time when you have to admit you are wrong. Now, those of you who know me have undoubtedly heard me admit such failings on several occasions. But even with that history, when you end up changing a long held personal dogma, it hurts.
Of what do I speak? The term sanitary landfill. This term has long been touted by DNR, public officials (including Bart) and private waste companies as the proper nomer for …a dump. There I said (actually wrote) it, but it still hurts a little.
Sanitary landfill is an attempt to gain public acceptance or at least ignorance of something which really isn’t all that clean. Landfills act as our waste pits and the increasing tonnage going to landfills is reflective of the good economic times. Why reuse it, just buy a new one! Nobody wants a dump in their back yard, but by calling them sanitary landfills and giving picturesque names such as Emerald Park, Cranberry Creek, and Timber Trail we can pretend they’re alright. Heck, sounds like a nice golf course or maybe a ritzy Rocky Mountain spa.
Of course, our illustrious County Clerk, Bob Bruso, has known this from the beginning. “Call it what you want Bartster, but it’s still a Dump!”. After nearly eight years of intensive PR and public education efforts directed at Bob, it’s time to waive the white flag. BOB WAS RIGHT.
Now there are a lot of ramifications of such a statement. Poor Sandy and Mary in the Clerk’s office will probably not be able to stand the situation for a good month. Fear and suspicion will doubtlessly run rampant through the Courthouse. “If Bob was right about the dump, could he have been right about….???”.
So where does that leave us? Well from my standpoint, it’s just all the more reason to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Compost. And you’ll be seeing several program expansions coming from the Solid Waste Department in the coming months. While landfilling will remain a necessary evil for the foreseeable future, we need to keep in mind that it is an evil, and should be used as a last resort.
